Ideology is a way of explaining the world through a particular lens. Most lenses overgeneralize one of their key insights, and that’s used to both spread and also discredit their general ideas. In principle, ideologies that seem better at predicting events through plausible means should gain in popularity over time. Here are some ideologies and their fundamental truths that I think derive from them in no particular order.
Progressivism: The world has gotten better over time, and moral progress exists.
Conservatism: Things that stand the test of time hold up well against current fads.
Libertarianism: Rules about conduct are upheld by the threat of violence.
Veganism: As a society, we treat animals very poorly and are responsible for an incredible amounts of suffering.
Liberalism: People have individual rights that should be maintained.
Social Justice: Some people have it worse than you.
Intersectionality: People are more than just one ‘thing’.
Nationalism: We should appreciate communities we’re in proximity to.
Accelerationism: Technology is generally good.
Effective Altruism: You should want your donations to make things better.
Capitalism: Price signals provide important information about what to do.
Objectivism: People are motivated by self-interest.
Socialism: Your job doesn’t care about you.
Feminism: Men scare women.
Democracy: Democracies don’t starve.
Constitutionalism: Ambition should check ambition.
Anti-Natalism: Sometimes life sucks.
Natalism: Sometimes life is awesome.
Stoicism: Being able to regulate your emotions is helpful.
Christianity: Loving your neighbor will make you happy
