A Little Bit About High Impact Exercise

Earlier on, I wrote an article about getting to the gym on a regular basis. While I still think the consistency associated with showing up regularly remains important, I want to focus this post on high-impact exercise.

High-impact exercise is exercise that results in more running and jumping, as opposed to walking and stepping. As a general rule, high impact exercise is harder on the body, but oftentimes comes with faster results. For instance, running burns more calories, helps the health of your bones more, and builds muscle better than walking, but is also less sustainable, and puts stress on your joints.

Generally, you can think of high impact exercise as exercise that gets you breathing heavy, your heart pumping, and involves both feet being off the ground at once.

Interestingly, sometimes low impact can also be high intensity. Activities like swimming, pilates, and yoga may tire you out, even if they aren’t high impact. High impact activities typically involve speed, which increases the force that impacts your body.

Some examples of high impact exercise include: flag football, running, Zumba, tennis, pickleball, crossfit, jump rope, and hiking.

What’s your favorite type of exercise?
