How I learned to win hearts and minds

On what subject(s) are you an authority?

I have a handful of valuable skills I’ve picked up in the 24 years I’ve been alive. Many of them are a result of wanting something, working backwards, and finding what I needed to do to see that outcome through.

Probably my strongest skill is my knowledge of debate and persuasion. Much like others starting their own heroes journey, I was not particularly affable, nor was I especially charismatic. What I lacked in rizz, I aimed to make up in open-mindedness. I’d be the guy willing to learn more about himself, warts and all, to improve.

I thought what I’d learn was a bit of economics, and suddenly my life would change as I became more persuasive. But, surprisingly, the more persuasive I became, the more my aspirations rose.

Instead of curb stomping those not familiar with strategy, I wanted to find ways of improving the lives of those around me. Through cajoling, I managed to get some of my shy friends into debate. More importantly, I learned how to persuade people into understanding my point of view.

This tool allowed me to branch out into the different things I’m now interested in: leadership, friendship, startups, technology, project and product management, standup comedy, talk radio, blogging.

I see very clearly the importance of charismatic leadership, and helping to draw others into common cause. Building community while helping grow people is something I hope to continue to foster throughout my life.
