Most people don’t enjoy getting up on stage and joking around in front of crowds of people. So, it follows that standup comedians are pretty bizarre people.
There’s a variety of things that can be said about them, as one myself, but one thing that a standup comedian cannot be is derivative.
That which always exists in plain sight will not be funny, because it is the norm. Things that are joked about must be odd.
Even things that are familiar have a hint of uncanny in order to provide a unique experience. What if your family’s awkward reunion involved fights with mechatronics. The rat in your kitchen bests you in fights. People come to be entertained and you’d be foolish not to bring cornbread to the PT Barnum production you’re putting on.
