Blame, Judgement Day, Polite Society

Everyone wants to be able to judge other people, but few want to be placed on the scale. There are three ways to resolve this tension.

The first is to say no holds barred, everyone can judge everyone. This strategy is one that typically helps those on the bottom because it allows for exchange without violence, and suasion is something pleasant.

A second approach is to say that no one’s views or actions can be judged. This approach is kind to those who are increasingly triggered by more obscure and puzzling reasons. It conveniently provides tools for those in power to protect discourse, and their own asses. Think a UK type of approach to speech.

A final approach, and one that I think is probably the most common is a selective approach to judgement. Some people are unprotected while others are overly protected. This strategy tends to work best when no one notices, but it tends to disintegrate into either the first or the second depending on the revolt of the public.
