What are your favorite types of foods?
I have this habit where I try and optimize the food I eat for whatever goal I have in mind. Sometimes it’s losing weight, sometimes it’s gaining muscle. Other times, it’s cheapness or reducing the amount of processing in my food.
Recently, I’ve been revamping my subway order which primarily adds value to my life when I realize that the combination of bread, onion, tuna, and sweet onion teriyaki puts me in a good place, an ecstatic, an exciting place.
The original recipe involved the Italian herbs and cheese, mayo, cheese, and all the vegetables.
I’ve been trying to reduce my calorie intake to look slightly better. But, I still want the core flavor and the feeling of treating myself. So, I started by switching to the Italian Bread and moving down to lite mayo rather than full fat.
The flavor is still good, but I believed that I could ship of Theseus myself. I dropped the mayo entirely and swapped it for creamy chipotle, eliminated the cheese, and downgraded my bread to flatbread. I also recognized that the lettuce provided me no cosmic joy, lacked crunch, and was overall reducing the average quality of the sandwich.
Now, my sandwich is about 800-840 calories, it has every vegetable except banana peppers, olives, and lettuce, and typically has hot sauce on it, to keep a bit of spice and excitement.
If I switch out the tuna entirely, the next step is to find out if the rotisserie chicken’s flavor profile needs something.
I love this experimentation, and I will build the sleekest, sexiest, skinny legend Subway sandwich.
