There is No Dignity in Handouts

If you aren’t providing something of value to someone else, the days stretch on indefinitely. You struggle to find motivation to do much. Increasingly, people are asking for greater rewards to do things that matter less to them. There’s a variety of reasons why, but one of the biggest ones is that it seems unclear at the end of the day, what you’re providing. When you don’t know what you’re providing, your office job is merely running down the clock and hoping for the best.

This is another reason I think government jobs blow chunks, that most of the role involves making life harder for people. The cranky woman at the DMV hates her life, and as a result hates you. Certain levels of idleness lead to idolatry in search for meaning. Men worship sex, singers, politicians, and drugs when they don’t see rumblings go on in their own lives. By contrast, when people are fulfilled and are able to see the fruits of their labor, when they’re able to see the impact that they make on the world around them, the need for these things is less.

Sometimes I hate that I’m entirely unreligious. No matter how hard I try, the concept of God is inconceivable! In a sense, religion provides people an outlet for which to project meaning, but as that’s hollowed out, alongside other meaningful social connections, people turn to increasingly esoteric drivel.
