Stop Being An Asshole, Read This Book

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Probably the greatest advice came from my debate coach back while I was complaining about never winning the big debates.

He noticed that a big reason I lost was I came off as unfriendly and didn’t focus on the other team’s arguments, shrugging their perspective off without consideration.

Instead of listening and responding, I would anticipate specific arguments and occasionally hit on their arguments.

Instead, considering closely what the other team said and agreeing with parts allowed me to come across as much more credible. Applying the close listening approach I learned in the excellent How To Win Friends and Influence People, I changed up my strategy entirely. I got really good, and became bearable to interact with.
