When I want to get something from someone on the internet, particularly traffic on my teeny-tiny blog, I like to do what I’ve coined ‘hate mail advertising’ which is premised on the simple psychological fact that people enjoy disagreeing and putting others down as a status game, and being boldly wrong is one of the fastest way’s to get attention on the internet.
Here’s how I get started. I begin by finding a relatively peaceful, slightly divided community on the internet. I like Reddit for this because of it’s high anonymity, and focus on text rather than images. Next, I look for some unpopular beliefs on the sub, and choose one that’s controversial enough that it’ll get reads, but mostly hate-reads.
Next, I’ll write a somewhat well-argued justification for the unpopular belief, one that’s plausible enough for a thought out reply on why I’m wrong, but not insurmountably correct. One that can be shared without too many downvotes/negative karma.
Finally, I’ll post the blog article wherever I can, believing that they’ll remain iconic for a while. This typically nets me between 300-1000 views on my blog, and a couple of cents. The more I do this, the more recognizable my blog becomes, and the more subscribers I get. I have about 40 subscribers now, but that’s because of a lack of discipline.
