Why is breaking up Google on the table?

In a recently leaked memo, antitrust discussions around what to do with Google included the potential for breaking up the organization.

In general, this comports with the idea that government has that bigness means badness. Since Google can really move the needle on certain things unilaterally, it must be destroyed or limited.

In general, governments want to avoid meaningful opposition or criticism. Anything that challenges this is regulated or controlled. Anything that doesn’t is viewed with less suspicion. Since money and power talk, government wants to ensure that they can mute.

While it seems like Google shouldn’t be broken up merely because it’s big, one downstream effect is to avoid the evil eye of public suspicion, power will be more inconspicuous.
