I started my masters for WGU on November 1st this year. I think I’ve finished the first class and reviewed the requirements for the second class and third class. Tomorrow I aim to complete the second and third classes, because the work is something I’m already familiar with- I see little need to spend extensive time reviewing something I already get.
In general, the idea of competency based education is based on the belief of individual efficacy. Without micromanagement, people will move at a speed they are comfortable to learn the material they want. Since they self-enroll, this is probably something they’re interested in. This combined with being able to move at the pace they want means that there’s less deadweight loss.
Traditional education was very stressful for me because I learned very quickly with very strong recall. This meant most of the time in class was wasted. If instead, I can progress at my own pace and focus on competency, I’m able to feel more fulfilled, and do better work. Add in no specific hours, and WGU seems like a better and better deal.
