Staying Execution in Courts of Public Opinion

The drama between Mr. Beast and Dogpack404 showcases what’s commonly referred to in domestic violence circles as a smear campaign. This is where a fire hose of accusations are shot at someone, by someone who doesn’t seem to stand to gain very much for doing so. The idea that someone is putting themselves on the line makes us instinctively believe they’re telling the truth and as a result, we often fail to listen to the other side of the story.

A lot of people are spiteful and get irrationally mad at others for perceived injustices, whether true or false. In an attempt to punish them, they are often willing to lie, because the strength of the accusations may be lacking. It’s not enough for someone to make mistakes, they need to be evil and a monster.

This type of behavior is why when someone alleges something, there needs to be an adversarial process in place, to ensure that someone comes to the truth. Without a strong investigation, it’s hard to know what’s true and false. Worse, punishing someone for something they didn’t do may in fact help out abusers willing to lie.
