Almost every time I go to the supermarket, I scan the aisles for a protein treat that I could relish. I try new treats most of the time, and as a result, I think I have a pretty good understanding of what’s being hyped by VC, versus what’s going to get real consumer demand.
In large part, this is because I’ve been avoiding sugar this year.
The worst protein snacks tend to be the protein cookies. For some reason, they’re high calorie and consistently awful.
I’ve also tried most of the Quest Bars, and generally find myself disappointed with one notable exception, the Chocolate Caramel Pecan. For some reason, this legitimately tastes like a snickers and I’ve eaten four of these on my trip to Alaska. I’m not sure why it’s so good, but its macros are great, it’s high in fiber, and it’s delicious.
The other protein dessert I’ve tried this last week is the Bareball Cake Batter. This one is disappointing, as it has the taste of whey, less fiber, and tastes considerably worse.
People eat the snacks for the taste in large part, and failing to provide a compelling product means a product will gradually run out of suckers to fool.
Probably my favorite tasting protein dessert is the Met-RX apple bar. It’s absolutely delicious, but completely would violate my challenge’s rules.
Another recent highlight is the protein brownie. I bought this at a GNC, and was pleasantly surprised by its flavor. I intended to go back and buy another despite a high price tag. This one gets dinged for a lack of distribution, but is pretty good.
