Today, I’ve officially graduated college. Embarrassingly, this semester was probably the worst grades of my life. Though, there is little correlation between learning and grades, so I can take some of it in stride. Some major things have happened to my perspective this last semester that I wanted to consider. First, I decided to delayContinue reading “No Longer A College Student”

My Testimony for Bill RSB-00247 for Free Expression on College Campuses
Hi, my name is Isadore Johnson, I am a senior economics major testifying on behalf of bill RSB-00247, the bill requiring a policy regarding freedom of expression on campus. I want to thank Representative Cheeseman, Vail, Fazio, Haskell, and Caroline Simmons, and others who want to work across the aisle to deal with this pressingContinue reading “My Testimony for Bill RSB-00247 for Free Expression on College Campuses”
Reading Comprehension Gets Worse & Worse Each Year
My organization, Huskies for Free Speech released a statement advocating against mandatory trigger warnings. This shouldn’t be hard to read- it’s less than a page long. It shortly gives a few reasons why making trigger warnings mandatory are not desirable, and it makes no claim about whether teachers can use trigger warnings if they want.Continue reading “Reading Comprehension Gets Worse & Worse Each Year”
Long Live The Electoral College!
Much of the debate about the electoral college is partisan. Republicans mostly like the electoral college because it benefits them because their constituency is spread out. Democrats mostly dislike the electoral college because they believe they benefit more from the “one man, one vote” principle. This phenomenon is understandable. If I was a politician, IContinue reading “Long Live The Electoral College!”
Should Johnny Got His Gun have been reprinted during WW2?
I recently wrote a paper which I’m quite pleased with. From the perspective of a literary analyst at Lippincott, I tried to morally reason through the ethics of doing so. Some context: Johnny Got His Gun is an anti-war novel describing how war is a crime committed by the old to the young. The author,Continue reading “Should Johnny Got His Gun have been reprinted during WW2?”
The University of Connecticut declared racism a public health crisis, now what?
I recently attended the Rally for a Peaceful Planet, an event put on by the student government. They had three goals: to eliminate refugee caps, to challenge police militarization, and to declare racism a public health crisis. I say good, there’s plenty of absurd racist policies on the book, and it’s time to clear house.Continue reading “The University of Connecticut declared racism a public health crisis, now what?”
A New Way To Understand Youth Activism
Is it better to have stronger but fewer or weaker yet numerous enemies? This question is one that manifests itself often into political will. Political parties constantly struggle over the correct way of approaching this problem. From my experience helping left-wing and right-wing causes, involving youth activism seems to different strategies. The left has aContinue reading “A New Way To Understand Youth Activism”
My Interview with Arnold Kling
In an effort to promote ideological and intellectual plurality on campus, I’ve been making a conscious effort to interview public intellectuals, especially those whose ideas don’t get talked about much on campus. Starting conversations about challenging topics, and engaging with work from people outside one’s own tribe is important to learning. This week, I sat down to interview Dr.Continue reading “My Interview with Arnold Kling”
I never want to hear you talk about income inequality again
In this article, I will argue through four different frameworks — natural rights, Marxism, social justice and intertemporal egalitarianism — why income inequality should be seen as a nonsense political issue, at least in the United States. By exploring these perspectives, I hope to demonstrate 1) property rights are important; 2) self-professed “egalitarians” at college shouldn’t be listened to; 3) open borders are essential, even if this makes the middle class worse off; and 4) economic growth is a moral imperative. Ultimately, the public should beContinue reading “I never want to hear you talk about income inequality again”
We Are Never Getting Back Together…. The case for splitting up America
Andrew Allison and I wrote this draft under the influence of SFL Top 100 Retreat, This many not be characteristic of either of our best work. Many countries are not happy with the government they have. Governments often have trouble representing their constituents, and in large part, this is due to different regional interests. InContinue reading “We Are Never Getting Back Together…. The case for splitting up America”
