Suits was added to Netflix in June 2023. I started watching, and was instantly hooked. I’ve been arguing with my friends who also watch the show, about why I think it’s clear that Mike is a better closer than Harvey, and I thought I’d post it online. Spoiler Warning: This list will contain spoilers for Suits.
- In a given episode of Suits, Mike is more likely to solve an intractable legal problem through seeing it from a different angle. A large part of being a good closer is the ability to see something through to completion, something I think Mike tends to get done.
- Harvey is incredibly dependent on Donna to succeed as completing his job, to the point of getting panic attacks when she works for Louis Litt. By contrast, Mike is often getting sabotaged by Louis. If Mike had a similar support system, like the backing of Jessica, I think he would be able to showcase his abilities more thoroughly.
- Mike has photographic memory, whereas Harvey has to rely on bluster and innuendo. Mike fundamentally has a stronger understanding of the law, and because of his abilities to find different angles, and reproduce documents he’s seen once, Mike is able to more accurately win lawsuits based on the relevant information.
- At one point in Suits, Jessica, the tactical genius and head honcho of Pearson Hardman, said something to the effect of Mike having the best traits of both herself and Harvey. I interpret that to mean that despite Jessica’s resentment of Mike, she saw his talent. Think of how powerful he’d be with law school under his belt.
- Mike is more honorable, fighting for the downtrodden and those without limitless resources. By contrast, Harvey often ends up crossing lines to win cases by finding dirt on people and colluding.
