Why do you blog?
I’ve been listening and reading to blogs since I was 15. I started with Marginal Revolution and got into Slate Star Codex pretty early.
I wasn’t very good at writing for a long time. I struggled to frame my ideas clearly and organize ideas, connecting the dots to paint a canvas of what I’m saying.
In college, I took a lot of writing classes, and spent a fair amount of time thinking about how to optimize my skills. This culminated in taking a lot of history and philosophy classes to improve my thinking, signing up to write an almost weekly column for the student paper pre-COVID, and getting involved in Students For Liberty. As I defended unpopular opinions informally, wrote lengthy academic papers about comparatively niche topics, and wrote gadfly articles in the paper, I had the chance to seriously improve my skills. Writing bootcamp for me was doing all the above, almost all the time, and it got me a bunch of writing gigs where I wrote voraciously for a variety of outlets, and matched their editorial style.
Post-college, I was still writing for several outlets, but I wanted to ensure that I’d maintain this skill. As I didn’t want to regularly make national news, I thought a blog would be in order, so I could ‘earn’ the views I was looking for, as I became unhappy in my first job.
I kept it up as I liked having an excuse to generate ideas. I hope to continue to use my skills to improve, and I hope that people consider these skills if and when they need a ghostwriter.
Even for a daily blog, I get to exercise discipline, creativity, organization, and meditativeness as I approach the page, even while I often write on my phone.
I blog because I love sharing information with others. Also by blogging I expand my audience
